Before I Die
I love these chalk walls I see in communities all over the country. I took this picture in Charlottesville, VA where my brother lives, home of the recent events that highlight some of the tension in our country over race, white supremacy, and feelings of disconnect. If you look closely, you can see that people took chalk to wall to share their values and what matters to them. My favorites:
Before I die I want to forgive
Before I die I want to travel abroad
Before I die I want to fall in love
Before I die I want to own a pug
Before I die I want to not die
Temporary installations like this chalk wall are a small glimpse into the heart of a community. They're beautiful because they allow for moments of creativity and a small way for us to feel like we're neighbors and that maybe we're not that different from each other after all. And I'll take a pug anyday.
